A special Performa 09 discussion intended to probe questions of performance in relationship to architecture and the city, and to speculate on the future of Performa.
What is the ideal performance space for 21st century New York? This session will be dedicated to the discussion and speculation of what defines a performance space. It will examine past examples of performance spaces–whether deliberately designed or spontaneously invaded–and where they have succeeded and or failed. By utilizing the Public School platform, this session intends to bring together professionals in visual arts, performing arts and architecture to understand the complex issues involved in ensuring a successful performance.

The title of the class comes from Georges Perec's book Species of Spaces. Perec writes, "This is how space begins, with words only, signs traced on the blank page." Over three sessions, this workshop will examine ways of describing space with words. To inspire new writings about spaces, readings will be assigned and serve as points of departure for group discussion and written output.

Class Reminder: Tonight Political History of Visual Display 2 November 12, 2009 6:30 PM Van Alen Institute, 30 West 22nd Street, 6th floor
The class examines modern political history of visual display/exhibitions. The artistic avant-garde radically altered the way we look at visual display by eliminating the separation between image and audience. But didn't it create the spectacle, simply giving the audience an illusion of participation?

Architecture is a stressful profession. Long hours sitting in front of a computer contribute to stress, obesity, and related health problems. Every day at 4pm I would hear the cappuccino machine whirring in every firm where I've worked. This course proposes teaching designers to recognize the need for alternative methods of stress reduction such as meditation for themselves and their employees. How environment affects health and wellbeing will also be discussed.
