We can generalize this proposition to cover landmarks, significant addresses, public spaces and the history of corporate architecture in the United States as can be studied between Dewitt Clinton Park (on the west side) and Sutton Place (on the east side).

This proposal is the result of a similar cut across Manhattan at 42nd street traveled on June 14, 2010.  During that crossing the conversation ranged from historical fact to utopian fantasy and the dystopian or mundane realities that are the everyday reality of the street.  We expect nothing less from this traverse.

CORRECTION! the class will meet at 53rd street and 8th avenue in front of 'Bagel Sticks' NOT the Ed Sullivan Theater and we will be heading EAST not West.

This class will be a series of hands-on workshops that will take students through several exercises to reinforce the concepts of Building Information Modeling(BIM) and introduce the tools for parametric building design using Revit Architecture.

Hi Bersley, In the past we have tried to frame 'hands-on' or 'skill based' workshops in a conceptual context - technique in discourse with ideas. Would you be able to frame the class in way?

commented on Mapping as Activism

More often than not, maps are used as a base for our research and design, but we rarely wonder how they were formed, by whom, and for what purpose. Maps are subjective. They should be questioned in the same way that we question our elected officials. What is their hidden (or not so hidden) agenda? Who paid for them? Whose interests are they serving?

In drawing a map, we embed in it our political views, our observations and our informed choices. We draw attention to certain things and minimize the presence of others.

What’s missing in the map of a shopping mall?
When did New Jersey vanish from the MTA subway map?
Where is the REAL Green Line between Israel and the occupied territories?

The class will not be streamed. besides not having the infrastructure, its sort of a TPS policy - classes are developed on-line but meet in-person.

The Public School (for Architecture) is a self-organizing program for shared teaching and learning opportunities.  Anyone can propose a class, take a class or teach a class through the Public School (for Architecture).

A group of volunteers called the Public School Committee meets twice a month to review proposals and develop classes. The committee is responsible for shaping the ideological goals of the program through active discussion and engagement with the community of users.  Every few months, one or two volunteers leave the committee a one or two new volunteers join. In this way the operation of the school is able to remain flexible and responsive to the multiple interests of the entire body of students and teachers.

Each committee member is able to help shape the school through the development of individual classes. To develop a class, a committee member is responsible for finding and confirming an instructor, scheduling the class at a time that works for the instructor and the students, coordinating class materials and readings and attending the class in an administrative capacity (or simply as a student).

The continued operation of the Public School (for Architecture) is dependent on an maintaining an engaged group of committee volunteers.

Please join us on Dec 16 at the Teachers Lounge at the Van Alen Institute to meet the current committee and find out more about the future of the Public School (for Architecture).

Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart famously said about obscenity that he could not define it but knew it when he saw it.  We have yet to determine if the same can be said for architecture.

Dear Finding Architecture participants, We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the opening class of the Public School (for Architecture) New York. This class will meet in the lower gallery of the Center for Architecture 536 LaGuardia Place on Tuesday, Oct 13 at 4pm.
