This class begins with the practice of hacking, cracking, and enhancing software and hardware, how it is done, successful resources to do it, and why it's condoned yet simultaneously illegal. Students are given the skills and knowledge of how to do it safely and, by doing so, able to stay at the cutting edge of the technological divide. Possibilities included access to Adobe CS5, Final Cut Studio, ripped DVDs, and greater use of the iPhone, iPod and iPad
The workshop involves people bringing in their computers, personal devices and hard drives and learn as well as teach fellow students to make their hardware do more. Internet connection is necessary. Power cords and cables are suggested.
The class is broken into two sections: personal computers and personal devices.
The first section focuses on how, where, what, and why a person might use pirated software. Online communities and legal software is also discussed and used. Safe installation practices and use are discussed. Suggested configurations are demonstrated.
The second section concerns jailbreaking the iPhone, iPad, or iPod for more versatile, customizable uses. Extra-cirrcular uses include: using your phone for other providers; installing applications that assist alternative uses; general liberation of the device.
