This class is a spin-off from The Page + The Screen: Siting Text in the Early 21st Century and Beyond, and focuses on the the future of journalism and progressive media. Related areas of inquiry include the rise of the informational commons, peer-to-peer networks, the Open Source movement, and the archive - both analog and digital.
This class is proposed as a two-part seminar at the Democracy Now! studio in Chelsea. During the first session, we will meet with Karen Ranucci, an independent journalist and the Development Director for DN! Students will bring relevant questions, discussion topics, and even readings. Together we will collectively compile an outline for our second meeting, where we will watch a live broadcast of the show. The show begins taping at 8am and finishes at 9am. Afterwards, we will spend about an hour and a half in discussion with some of the show's staff and producers. Karen Ranucci will facilitate this second session as well.
This will also be an excellent opportunity to introduce Democracy Now! to The Public School...
