This class is a spin-off from The Page + The Screen: Siting Text in the Early 21st Century and Beyond, and focuses on the the future of journalism and progressive media. Related areas of inquiry include the rise of the informational commons, peer-to-peer networks, the Open Source movement, and the archive - both analog and digital.

I am proposing this class as a two-part seminar, which involves a special field trip to Democracy Now!'s (http://www.democracynow.org) new studio, during which time we will watch a live broadcast of the show.  This will be at 8am. The show is over at 9 and then we have been invited to spend about an hour and a half in discussion.

The first class would be at The Public School space in downtown Brooklyn - in this section, all students will bring relevant questions, discussion topics, and even readings.  I will come prepared to lead the class, but I am really hoping to moderate a discussion generated from student questions.  During this seminar style class, we will collectively compile an outline for the discussion at DN! After this meeting, I will give them this outline so they are prepared for our visit.

The second class will be the field trip to Democracy Now! I will also teach this section, but again, my aim is to have a round-table discussion of these issues and to really take advantage of the experience and vision of Democracy Now!

This will also be an excellent opportunity to introduce Democracy Now! to The Public School...
