The Page + The Screen: Siting Text in the Early 21st Century and Beyond | Session 3
Tuesday, March 2, 7:15pm, at The Reanimation Library at 543 Union Street, Brooklyn;
Class limit: 10 students; taught by Andrew Beccone
All sessions of The Page + The Screen are FREE.

This session of The Page + The Screen will be conducted as a research workshop. Participants will divide into two groups; each tasked with producing a short, collaborative research project based on a single topic that will emerge from the initial class discussion about the library. One group's findings will result in a print-based format (e. g. a zine, pamphlet, spreadsheet, etc.), and the other's will be published online (e. g. as a blog, website, Facebook page, etc.). When putting the projects together, both groups should take into consideration the particular strengths of each format (print/screen). Because this could easily take more time than one session would allow, we may decide to set up a second session in which both groups could share their projects. Participants are encouraged to visit the library outside of class time and during regular hours to continue their research/work.

Suggested Readings

“Unpacking My Library: A Talk About Book Collecting” by Walter Benjamin from Illuminations
Envisioning Information by Edward Tufte
Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations by Clay Shirky
“The Ecstasy of Influence: A Plagiarism” by Jonathan Lethem
Archive Fever: Uses of the Document in Contemporary Art by Okwui Enwezor

The Reanimation Library is a small, independent library based in Brooklyn at Proteus Gowanus, an interdisciplinary gallery and reading room. The library is a collection of books that have fallen out of mainstream circulation. Outdated and discarded, they have been culled from thrift stores, stoop sales, and throw-away piles across the country and given new life as resource material for artists, writers, and other cultural archeologists.

Andrew Beccone is the founder and librarian of The Reanimation Library.
