A class on opening up hardware and learning how things work. This class is geared toward artists who want to make simple interactive components for their project and engineers who want to share their knowledge and D.I.Y skills with creative community. Here are few things I’d like to teach and learn on basics of working with hardware.

This project is in part an exhibition on Vidéogazette and in part a look at paralell contemporary practices that employ technology and seek experimental, non-hierarchical approaches to creative and cultural production. The Philly Public School has been invited to launch a series of class proposals with accompanied posters (with the inclusion of other Public Schools) which will eventually culminate into a class or series of classes. A group will gather virtually on IRC during Tuesday evenings this month to generate material The Whole World is Watching. Deadline for this would be the first week in May. See scheduled dates and comments for detail on how to get involved.
A basic introduction to the Ruby programming language, with perhaps a focus on a group project like running a website with Ruby programs we build together.
This class has already happened once, but this is a plea to reinstate it. See http://nyc.thepublicschool.org/class/3711 for the orginal class.
There are already two willing teachers for this class, and we had our first class at the Public School space on Freeman St, but since then we haven't been in the schedule. If there are any openings in that space, please let us know. Our group (about 16 people) has already started a google group outside of The Public School to try and find another space but so far have not been successful.
The Public School New York is planning a weeklong intensive and site-specific reading group for the summer of 2012 on the topic of democracy. Building upon past classes such as "...there is nothing less passive than the act of fleeing" in the summer of 2010, "On Democracies" will take place in public spaces, privately owned public spaces, inside amenable organizations, and (possibly) in commercial spaces. The new series will include screenings, presentations, and discussions that will explore issues pertaining to parliamentary systems, electoral processes, citizenship, and participation in and resistance to democracies.
The first meeting will take place at 155 Freeman Street at 11am on Sunday, May 6th. It will be a time to reflect upon the May Day General Strike and to plan the series. Please join us for a casual potluck brunch.
