This class is a spin-off from The Page + The Screen: Siting Text in the Early 21st Century and Beyond, and focuses on the the future of journalism and progressive media. Related areas of inquiry include the rise of the informational commons, peer-to-peer networks, the Open Source movement, and the archive - both analog and digital.
This class is proposed as a two-part seminar at the Democracy Now! studio in Chelsea. During the first session, we will meet with Karen Ranucci, an independent journalist and the Development Director for DN! Students will bring relevant questions, discussion topics, and even readings. Together we will collectively compile an outline for our second meeting, where we will watch a live broadcast of the show. The show begins taping at 8am and finishes at 9am. Afterwards, we will spend about an hour and a half in discussion with some of the show's staff and producers. Karen Ranucci will facilitate this second session as well.
This will also be an excellent opportunity to introduce Democracy Now! to The Public School...

I am very interested but cannot make it to the first session. Any chance the readings (and a recording of the discussion??) might be posted? If I can't make it to the first, can I attend the second?

This class has been rescheduled! Thank you all for your patience. Please note that both sessions will now take place at the Democracy Now! studio in Chelsea and will be lead by independent journalist and DN! development director Karen Ranucci. (See the revised proposal for additional details.)
Session 1: Tuesday, April 6, 6:30pm
Session 2: Monday, April 12, 7:30am (taping starts at 8am)
Since the first session will take place at dinner time, please feel free to bring something to eat.
Karen has offered some initial questions to get us started:
Can objective journalism exist?
Who is "the media"?
Does the media shape public opinion? How?
What is the role of citizen and independent journalism in a democracy?
What outlets currently exist for independent media?
How is media changing with new technologies? Will there be more or less opportunity for independent news and strong investigative reporting in the future?
What, if any, are the alternative business models capable of supporting independent media?
Will the Internet always be free and open?
I'll also include a link to a DN! interview with Robert McChesney and John Nichols that addresses some of these issues.

Looking forward!
